TRIBUTE POETRY

THIS HAWK, THIS DOVE
By Tony Aeilts

We mourn for those who have gone before,
in a way, in a time, that shakes our core.
A mixture of sadness and disbelief,
feeling lost and empty within our grief.

What has brought this, this time in space?
A plan? A symptom? The human race?
Answers escape within our heart,
but our spirit seeks a place to start.

The peace officer, the protector and friend
a sage and wise man penned,
Is both the dove and the taloned hawk,
Both describe this calling’s walk.

In harm's way they choose to stride,
A heavenly calling . . . a way to abide.
With others before self and self in last
In today’s world, a stark contrast.

Compassion and valor create this mix,
our eyes lift up . . . transfixed.
This hawk, this dove . . . remains in flight,
Our sadness passes, replaced with insight.

This dove and hawk still wing above,
symbolic of grace and selfless love.
Our hearts can be lifted, our spirits inspired,
for the sake of the badge and for what has transpired.

This peace officer, this dove and hawk,
remains eternal within our walk.
Our hearts, each one, can soar as well.
In heart and spirit there is no farewell.
