her serenity was slashed
to pieces, that night
as was her husband.
the faceless intruder left scars far deeper
than those on his body
(no one knows)
images of that night
stabbed into her mind (spirit)
far more heinous
than those superficial wounds
that caused his death.
those were fleeting, hers eternal. . .
tearing open at the slightest
touch.
sound.
the illusion of safety thin as cellophane, vulnerable
as hard as she tries to protect (herself)
the faceless intruder
invades, violates (wins)
nightly.
(I feel so inadequate)
no man-made shield sufficient,
no effort of reassurance comforts,
nothing assuages
the violence of his act,
the blood-stained walls
refuse to be white-washed
and time does not diminish the hue.
so the thin veil of coping
is rewoven daily
and she cries herself to sleep.
