TRIBUTE POETRY

WHO CARES?
By Richard J. May

Who cares that still another name was added to the rolls?
No one knew that much about this group of nameless souls
They saw them in the cruisers and as they walked their beats
But little did the public know of all their daily feats

Who cares that the officer was a brother, son, or dad?
Or that he served three duty tours in far away Baghdad?
And coached a team of youngsters in how to play the game
While thieves and robbers cursed him each time they heard his name

Who cares about the sister lost, this one who wore the shield?
The mother, sister, daughter for whom the bells have pealed
She played her undercover roles as prostitute or narc
Then took her children next day on a picnic in the park

Who cares that this fine officer has given up their life?
Besides a grieving husband or newly widowed wife?
Their families knew their sacrifice, their courage and their fears
And watched them daily do their best, through mostly hidden tears

Who cares about the youngster who will be the next recruit?
Who’ll stand here next year at this time to honor and salute
And do a job that few would choose and fewer yet could do…
Protect and serve their fellow man and proudly wear the blue
