WILLIAM L SIGMON Rank~ Police Officer (was being promoted soon) Panel~ 17-E: 4 Department~ Metropolitan, Washington D.C., P.D.End of Watch~ May 25, 1971 Cause~ Gunfire Age~ 34 Years of Service~ 13 Description~ Officer Sigmon was shot by a suspect during a bank robbery. Two (3 but one of them never had to serve time in prison since she was able to use a new law and went to California as a school teacher) suspects robbed the Savings and Loan on MacArthur Blvd., NW, and fled on foot (actually caught in a panel van several miles away). Officers Sigmon and Swartz gave chase. As the suspects ran up a steep flight of stairs, the officers engaged them in a gunfight. Officer Sigmon wounded one suspect before the other suspect, Lawrence Caldwell, shot him once in the heart with a .45 caliber handgun. Officer Sigmon died on the scene. His assailant was found guilty and incacerated for 33 years until his release in 2003. Timms was killed in prison soon after being sent to the Max. Security Prison in Ill.I am his son, Tom Sigmon & my father is in Heaven with God but I do not understand how Caldwell could be released and was awarded alot of money when he sued DC for mistreatment during his arrest in 1971. I had forgiven my fathers assailants because I know that I will see my father again someday in Heaven!
